A research project that aims at disrupting a linear concept practice, into a divergent one. Most designers, over time find a way of working, that sustains their excitement and passion for their work. This evolves with consistent reflection on practice, that consecutively helps them to discover something they are curious about. This research attempts to delve into this space and develop my design practice.

Reflecting on my practice, I found that outcomes from my design process had become predictable, safe and commercial. Quality consistent design created within a strict time-frame was often swayed by my own biases. The process had lost the space for exploration and was leaning toward instinct, rather than experiment.

Addressing this thought, my research question aims to develop a generative design process that presents room for experimentation. This project hopes to move away from, ‘making as a result of thinking’ and instead grow into ‘thinking as a result of making’. Disrupting my existing practice with different ways of working with a challenge to use different materials and mediums, aims to bring a plethora of knowledge and give me an opportunity to test and push limits of these media.

Through this act of disruption, I hope to discover my ‘curiosity’ in design and find my own visual language along way. The experimental set up created for this research project also aims to be a framework for future exploration in my design practice. This research project is an in-depth enquiry into the process involved in at act of ‘designing’, where the process itself will be a ‘mode of discourse’. (Seago & Dunne 1999)
